Improper use of interrogative

疑问代词使用不当

  谁

  who

  Example:

  Wrong:你等谁人?

  Right:你等谁?

“谁” is an interrogative pronoun referring to a person. It can act as an object independently, so “人”is redundant.

  Example:

  Wrong:谁马老师问题?

  Right:马老师问谁问题?

This is the literal translation of “Whom did teacher Ma ask the question?” In Chinese, the verb “问”can take two objects, one denoting person (“谁”),the other denoting object (“问题”),and the former one always goes before the latter.

  Example:

  Wrong:谁是哪国人?

  Right:他是哪国人?

  Right:谁是美国人?

A special question using the interrogative pronoun normally has only one point to be asked. Thus it is senseless for the above sentence of merely five characters to bear two interrogative points. Either “谁”or “哪”is to be deleted. Both two ways require a slight change in the original structure.
